  1. Release Notes From Thayer Birding Software
  2.  
  3. Welcome to Thayer Birding Software's CD-ROM titles "Birds, Birds, 
  4. Birds", "Birds of North America" and "Birds of the World 
  5. Sampler".  This read me file will be easier to read if you 
  6. maximize the window.
  7.  
  8. Note: to close this window, click on File/Exit.

  20. Notes On Using This Package:
  21.  
  22. You can easily move between the three areas in this 
  23. CD-ROM. Here is how to do this: open more than one of the 
  24. programs and then jump back and forth between them using the ALT 
  25. and the TAB keys on your computer keyboard.
  26.  
  27. You can minimize the program by clicking on the button with the 
  28. single downward pointing triangle in the top right corner of your 
  29. computer screen. The program will seem to disappear--but it is
  30. still open. You can see the minimized icon in the lower left part 
  31. of your computer screen. Now go back to the Thayer Birding 
  32. Software Group and click the icon for Birds of North America. When
  33. that program opens, hold down the ALT key on your keyboard. Then 
  34. press the TAB key to scroll through the programs that are open on 
  35. your computer. We already know that Birds, Birds, Birds is open. 
  36. You may have other programs open as well. Keep pressing the 
  37. TAB key until you reach Birds, Birds, Birds and then release the 
  38. TAB and the ALT keys. You will find yourself back in the Birds, 
  39. Birds, Birds program. To jump back into Birds of North America, 
  40. just hold down the ALT key and press the TAB key once--then 
  41. release both keys. You could also open Birds of the World Sampler 
  42. and jump between all three if you wanted to.

  44. Also, many times you will click on buttons or hot spots (green 
  45. text) that will cause either a popup to appear (usually pictures)
  46. or other windows to appear.  If it is a popup you can make it go 
  47. away by clicking on any blank (white) part of the screen. You can
  48. tell it is a popup because it will not have a "return to ..." 
  49. hot spot on it, where all windows will.

  52. Notes On Video Resolutions:
  53.  
  54. - If you are running a video resolution greater than 640x480 
  55.   pixels, you may not want to move or resize the window.  
  56.       (It won't stop the program from executing, but it also 
  57.      might not look very good.)
  58.  
  59. - If you are running a video resolution greater than 640x480 
  60.   pixels, we recommend using small fonts.
  61.  
  62. - If the bird pictures appear dark on your monitor, try adjusting 
  63.   the light/dark and the contrast on your monitor.

  66. Problems Which May Occur
  67.  
  68. - If you see a magnifying glass icon on the corner of all of your 
  69.   pictures, then you have your monitor set to 16 colors instead of
  70.   256 colors.  Reset your video resolution to a minimum of 640x480
  71.   pixels, 256 colors to resolve this problem.  
  72.  
  73.     If you are running 16 colors, a related problem will be 
  74.     that when you attempt to display the range maps, you will 
  75.     see the following message "This picture could not be 
  76.     displayed because of an authoring error".  Change the 
  77.     resolution as stated above.

  79. - If the program halts, or works fine but doesn't play the bird 
  80.   calls, make sure that other applications that also use the sound
  81.   card are not running (such as Quick CD with SoundBlaster).  Also
  82.   you might want to make sure that other CD's that you own will 
  83.   play through the sound card.
  84.  
  85. - If the program tries to run, or runs and stops, try closing 
  86.   some of your open applications.
  87.  
  88. - You should be able to run all three programs at the same time 
  89.   if you are running Windows 3.1x or Windows for Workgroups 3.1x.  
  90.   There is a problem running them simultaneously if you are 
  91.   running Windows NT/AS (unknown version).
  92.  
  93. - If the program has been running fine, and all of a sudden it 
  94.   doesn't, try deleting the program group and re-installing the 
  95.   software.  Possible reasons include changing the logical drive 
  96.   designation for your CD-ROM, overwriting dll's, or otherwise 
  97.   inadvertantly deleting or destroying needed files.  
  98.  
  99. - One of the beta testers for the product reported that they 
  100.   received a "cannot read" message from time to time when they 
  101.   clicked on various buttons.  That tester reports that choosing 
  102.   "retry" always worked fine.  It appears that it was a timing 
  103.   problem with that particular CD-ROM drive, (unreported brand) 
  104.   and it's drivers.  If it happens to you, please try the same 
  105.   technique and also let us know.

  107. - If you are still having problems, and you think that the 
  108.   problem might be with your hardware or your hardware/software 
  109.   setup, you might want to get a copy of the SetUp Advisor from 
  110.   your favorite computer or software store.  It is made by 
  111.   TouchStone, and will check out your various installed 
  112.   components.  It retails for about $20.

  115. Printing From Birds, Birds, Birds
  116.  
  117. With the exception of the Order Form (which will go to your 
  118. printer), all other topics are copied to the Clipboard.  From the 
  119. Clipboard you can Paste them into any Windows word processor 
  120. (like Write or Word).  To Paste, open the selected word processor,
  121. and either choose Edit/Paste from the menu or press Shift+Ins.  
  122. We are sending the topics to the Clipboard instead of the printer 
  123. because we like to use color, and most people don't have color 
  124. printers!  Copying the topics to the Clipboard removes the color.
  125.
